2011 02 10 074.JPG - Mum, enjoying the view of the Mt Pelee volcano. (You can only just make out the peak through the cloud cover.) It looks peaceful and serene today, but you wouldn't have wanted to be here on the 8th May, 1902!The whole population of 30,000, (barring two lone survivors), were killed when Mt Pelee erupted and completely wiped out the city of St Pierre. Tragically, the deaths could have been avoided. The volcano had been giving obvious warnings for a whole week: spewing out ash over the town, and wiping out nearby estates with lava flows. But the Governor didn't want the responsibility of evacuating the city .. so he chose to hope the problem would just "go away"!!
